The effect of pre-testing on math achievement and self-confidence

Ages: 5-12

Description of the practice

As far as is known, no research has been conducted into whether the use of pre-tests has an effect on the math performance of primary school students and confidence in their own abilities. Pre-tests measure mastery of knowledge and skills before students have been instructed. Pre-testing is a way to gain insight into the prior knowledge of students, so that teachers can better tailor the educational offer to the level of the students.

Region

  • Country: Netherlands

Example of Implementation

If students already perform sufficiently on certain parts in a new math block, the teacher may decide, for example, that they may skip the accompanying instruction and practice material. This allows these students to spend more time on parts that they do not master or do not master well.
