Project: "LET’S OPEN THE CURTAIN"

Ages: 5-12

Description of the practice

The Catalan School Josep Maria de Segarra, for Primary Education (Barcelona, Catalonia), is following the pedagogical proposals from Magnet schools. These schools are entended to "offer, to all students enrolled in that particular school, a special curriculum capable of attracting substantial numbers of students of different social, economic, ethnic, and racial backgrounds". Thanks to the impetus of their Magnet alliance, the schools have taken action to offer artistical education to every student as part of their personalized education, both during winter and summer holidays. The Project: "LET’S OPEN THE CURTAIN" is a clear evidence of their good work.

Example of Implementation

The School Josep Maria de Segarra is devoted to offer "innovative instructional programs that promote equity, diversity, and academic excellence for all students in public school", inspired by the Magnet Schools programme from US.

In this particular actvity,  the school suggests a Summer project to all the students, based on an idea by Felix Gonzalez-Torres (1957-1996), a Cuban artist who studied in New York.

During their vacation time, children are invited to create a personal "chain" to tell their story with recycled matterials. At the end of the vacation time, they will join  their chains together, to build a collaborative curtain.

Their  proposal is an example of their inclussive approach, and tells us about the school climate they care for.
